G36 has no future in Bundeswehr

According to, Defense Minister Ursula von der Leyen stated that Bundeswehr will find replacement rifle for G36. Special Forces will reveice new weapons immediately.

G36 has been exposed to have problems in high temperature climate as well as trunnion having problems when the round count gets high. Recently, German government reported their findings that confirm the problem.

The weapon's capacity to hit targets fell to 30 percent when the surrounding temperature reached 30 degrees Celsius (86 Fahrenheit) or when the weapon became hot through constant use, the report said.

Law makers and guns

Rep. Ken Buck (R-Co) and Trey Gowdy (R-SC) got in to a bit of hot water when Rep. Buck posted photos of two holding an AR in Washington D.C. The rifle did not have a bolt and had trigger lock so it was non-functional.

Some people criticized the two for bringing illegal weapons in to the D.C., but according to the Washington Post,

Lt. Kimberly Schneider, a spokeswoman for the U.S. Capitol Police, said members of Congress “may maintain firearms within the confines of their office.” Not only that, Schneider said, members “and any employee or agent of any Member of Congress may transport” weapons within the Capitol grounds as long as the “firearms are unloaded and securely wrapped.”

Rep. Buck did go through several resources to ensure it was legally there, including Ethics Committee, Capitol Hill police, and D.C. Police.

This is not the first time a lawmaker did this. Former Rep. Charlie Wilson, also famous for book and movie "Charlie Wilson's War" decorated his office with firearms. Here he is with an  Enfield in 1988 (NY Times)

Liquid body armour technology

This is an interesting technology using non-Newtonian liquid. It means that when the liquid has force applied to it, it hardens instead of moving away.

Regardless of whether it can be properly used in real life or not it is an intersting development. To the best of my recollection, there has been someother examples of similiar nature.

This pistol is quite an interesting little machine pistol. Three round burst is a nice touch since machine pistols like these tend to shoot really fast. In comparison, CZ 75 Full Auto was a bit more difficult to manage, at least personally.

Another thing is that the grip is a bit thicker than 92FS, to the best of personal memory.

Retaining proficiency level

It can be quite difficult to maintain the live fire practice amount due to professional and family commitment, as well as market conditions affecting ammunition supply and price.

Some of the things a shooter can do to retain their skill level in times like these are,

1. Dry-fire: This is the easiest thing to do that won't cost any money. Trigger pull is one of the most important aspect of firing a gun and dry-firing is one of the best ways to retain the skill. It still won't replace actual live-fire, but is really better than not doing anything.

2. Reloading: It is nice to be able to shed some time from loading and being able to do it consistently over multiple times is great. Practice various reloading techniques and it costs nothing. Emergency, Speed, and tactical reloading can be practiced, and if you want to add some realism, you can use snap caps.

3. Transition from target to target: This is something you can do to enhance your multiple target shooting skills. You don't have to incorporate dry-firing(although if you can, it's highly recommended), and just focus on honing your small details.

Personal recommendation is to have 3-4 targets or aiming points and practice transitions. You can practice with two targets, but it is better with 3 or more from personal experience. You can also adjust distance away from target to account for angle you have to move.

With these kinds of practice, a shooter should be able to retain proficiency level he had before. It does require the shooter to make some time, but if you can spare 10-15 minutes each day, it should be plenty for casual shooters.

Shooting skills are perishable skills, and if you can prevent skill degradation, then you are doing well.

Bundeswehr confirms G36 problem

According to Spiegel Online, German military(Bundeswehr) has confirmed that the problem lies with trunnion of G36, not with the ammo. With extended use, heat builds up and it weakens the trunnion and polymer contact, resulting in point of impact shift.

Bundeswehr has suspended purchase of additional G36 for the time being. They are considering other solutions, including getting a new rifle to replace G36

H&K has been insisting that the rifle was made within the specification presented by the German military.
